Robert "Bobby" Calhoun was born in Little Falls, MN in March 1945 to Ray and Edie Calhoun. From his earliest years Bobby exhibited the traits that would later become the hallmarks of his life. Bobby Calhoun personified the American Dream through his work ethic, intelligence, sense of humor and depth of character.
Even as a young boy Bobby understood hard work. Shining shoes, delivering papers and mowing laws were among the jobs he did before age 11. After excelling in both sports and academia, Bobby earned his high school diploma and went on to attend college. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. Hard work and ambition led Bobby to graduate with a Juris Doctorate from the University of Minnesota Law School.
In 1970 Bobby became Professor Calhoun an was granted the honor of teaching at St. Cloud State University in the College of Business Marketing and Business Law Department. For the next 38 years he continued to teach and mentor thousands of students. As many of his students know, Bobby loved "hypos" and he was famous for them. Bobby rose to become chair of the Marketing and Business Law department in the Herberger College of Business. In addition to teaching, Bobby was also a highly respected Assistant County Prosecutor for Stearns County for 31 years.
In recent years, Bobby was excited to begin his phased retirement from St. Cloud State University. He often referred to himself with the analogy of an airplane that was coming in for a landing with the flaps and landing gear down. Set to enjoy the fruits of his labors, Bobby demonstrated his ability to enjoy the present while dreaming/planning for the future.
Bobby was not only successful in his career, but was also a wonderful friend, husband and father. His sense of loyalty led to a rich social network that made him loved and endeared by more people than many could dream of. His lifelong friendships date back to grade school in Little Falls and the number of people who call him friend grew with each passing year. No one was more important to Bobby than Weeze, his wife of 41 years. She was his high school sweetheart and he always said to her how beautiful she was and how much he loved her.
Bobby's legacy is the example he provided for all of us on how to live our lives. He worked hard, played hard valued friends, family and life. As his friend Dale once said, "I think everyone should know how to have fun and teach their friend (and everyone they meet) how to have fun, work hard, and balance a successful career like Bobby did so masterfully. Absolutely nobody could do it like Bobby could."
Bobby's life lives on in the memories we all have.
The Calhoun Family is grateful for all of your love and support.
